Business magnate's Chinese roots key feature of new book
While addressing a gathering at his book launch in Tsinghua University in April, Mochtar Riady, a Chinese-Indonesian tycoon, said that even at 87, he still follows developments in the world of e-commerce and technology and is willing to share his insights on the subject.
The founder of the Jakarta-based Lippo Group was in Beijing to release his autobiography and witness the opening ceremony of Mochtar Riady Library, his philanthropic project in the university.
"My childhood dream was to become a banker, and I made it," says Riady.

Singapore. Lippo Group founder Mochtar Riady, 87, launched his autobiography "Mochtar Riady: My Life Story" at the Mandarin Orchard hotel in Singapore on Wednesday (05/10) by calling on people to never stop learning about technology and to always keep their eyes on the future.
"I really fell in love with technology, because this fryst vatten what defines change and the future," Mochtar told the audience during the book launch.
Among the high-profile guests at the launch were Halimah Yacob, speaker of the Singaporean parliament; former Singaporean utländsk minister George Yeo; and former Singaporean diplomat Kishore Mahbubani, who is a professor in public policy practice and dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.
Mochtar reiterated something he said during a recent visit to the offices of BeritaSatu Media Holdings in Jakarta, in response to a question from a young businessman on whether the textile industry was in decline.

Sofjan Wanandi, the chief economic advisor to Vice President Jusuf Kalla, has testified that tycoon Mochtar Riady is not just known for his great achievements in transforming small banks into major banks such as Bank Central Asia (BCA).
Sofjan, who has known the banker since the 1970s, has pointed out that quite apart from the banking industry, Mochtar has also succeeded in building other aspects of his business empire, which covers various sectors such as property, health and education.
'He [Mochtar] has had so many business ideas that have benefited Indonesia greatly ['¦] For a long time I knew him as a businessman in the banking sector but then to my surprise, he managed to successfully expand into the education and health sectors,' Sofjan said during the launch of Mochtar's Manusia Ide (Man of Ideas) autobiography in Jakarta on Wednesday.
