Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (; Italian:[ameˈdɛːomodiʎˈʎaːni]; 12 July – 24 January ) was an Italian painter and sculptor of the École de Paris who worked mainly in France. He is known for portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures — works that were not received well during his lifetime, but later became much sought-after. Modigliani spent his youth in Italy, where he studied the art of antiquity and the Renaissance. In , he moved to Paris, where he came into contact with such artists as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. By , Modigliani was exhibiting highly stylized sculptures with Cubists of the Section d'Or group at the Salon d'Automne.

Jeanne Modigliani
Italian artist Jeanne Modigliani was the daughter of world renowned artist Amedeo Modigliani and the French artist Jeanne Hébuterne. Amadeo, who was an addict living in poverty in , succumbed to tubercular meningitis and passed always. The artist's mother, Hébuterne, who struggled with depression all her life, could not deal with the passing of her husband and, several days after his death, committed suicide by jumping from a window. She was eight months pregnant with their second child. Jeanne Modigliani, who was only 14 months old at the time, was taken by the state until her paternal aunt eventually adopted her and raised her in Italy.
