    Born on the 3rd of March in 1933, Chiththalage Carlo Kashmiyar Fonseka was the eldest of the family of four children. Being the child of Alice Fernando and George Fonseka, he  had his early education in Maris Stella College Negombo and later joined St. Joseph’s College Colombo. Marking the beginning of his higher education, he followed the path of his father who was also a doctor. In 1955 he was selected to the medical faculty of Colombo and performed well graduating with a first class in his MBBS degree.

    After completing the degree he started his work to serve the people by joining as an intern professor K. Rajasuria and senior surgeon Dr. Noel Bartholomeusz in the Colombo General Hospital.     Note: As I bemoan my loss as well as mankind’s, I am thankful to God for three things. First that Carlo joked about the Newton obituary at the end of this article saying it was premature. Indeed he outlasted it by 3 years. Second, it was last week that I got a chance to visit him at the National Hospital. His request to me was that I visit a 42 year old Tamil man Jesuthasan he had befriended who was alone and awaiting a difficult heart operation. That is the man Carlo was. He remembered only “Intensive care”. I found Jesuthasan and visited him too.

    Now the third. Carlo was an avowed atheist. He has dedicated his body to a medical school. However, he took his wife to Church regularly.     In the year 2020, the month of June,

    Heralds 150 years of the Colombo Medical School!

    The diseased and depopulated Vanni, in the 1860s

    Lead to the birth of the medical school in 1870.

    During governor Hercules Robinson’s reign,

    In the surgical ward of Colombo General, the school became,

    The colonial nordlig Province surgeon, Dr James Loos,

    Was the first principal of the Colombo Medical School.

    The names of the first teachers three,

    Were doctors Loos, E.L. Koch and R. Andree

    Initially the course was a mere years three

    Was extended to fyra, in the year 1873.

    In 1875, the school moved to its new abode,

    To land begåvad by Samson Rajapakse on Kynsey Road,

    J.W. Charles dem Soysa, Simon Fernando & Wimala Gunawardana
