Zhang Dali
Born ni 1963 in Beijing, Zhang Dali is a committed contemporary artist. After obtaining a diploma from the National School of Fine Arts, he moved to Italy and experimented with the art of graffiti. He retained this experience and on his return became one of the leaders of Chinese graffiti. The artist signs his pieces as AK 47, making reference to the Soviet gun, a symbol of the violence inflicted on the population of Beijing. His second signature 18K, for 18 carats, incarnates the hope of new Chinese prosperity.
His 2000 giant self-portraits, associated with the Chai character (represents the demolition of the city) these giant portraits were displayed in the Chinese capital between 1995 and 1998 and made him internationally renowned. Zhang Dali (Chinese: 张大力, born 1963, in Harbin, China) is an artist based in Beijing.
Zhang trained at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Design, where he graduated in 1987. After his studies, he moved to Yuanmingyuan as a freelance artist (1987–1989) and started to show his works in independent exhibitions. He spent the years 1990–1995 in Italy, where he came into contact with graffiti art. He was the only graffiti artist in Beijing throughout the 1990s. His works cross a multitude of techniques including painting, sculpture, photography, and installations. In the four decades of his career his works were shown in more than 300 exhibitions all over the world.

Zhang DaliChinese artist Zhang Dali, born in 1963, first came into contact with graffiti in the early 1990s when he was living in Italy. He fled his home country in the wake of the 1989 Tiananmen massacre, which he survived as a protester. After returning, he became one of the very first graffiti artists in Beijing. Zhang’s key project in that period, Dialogue and Demolition, was a reaction towards the destructive aspects of China’s modernization and urban expansion. He spray painted the outline of his bald-headed profile on walls slated for demolition after the forced relocation of local inhabitants.
