  • In title and concept, this work is made in gesture and commemoration to architect Julian Francis Abele.  Until events in , there was little knowledge of Julian Francis Abele’s direct hand in designing most of the campus of Duke University as chief designer of the Philadelphia-based Horace Trumbauer architectural firm.  In , Julian Francis Abele was the first African American to earn a degree in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Fine Arts, and received many prizes during his studies including being elected class president of the school’s Architectural Society in his senior year at the university.

    In , Julian Abele was hired by Horace Trumbauer to join his architectural firm based on Trumbauer’s notice of Abele’s award winning work at the University of Pennsylvania.  By , Abele became the firm’s chief designer.  In his capacity as chief designer, Abele would design over buildings, including Harvard University’s Widener Memorial Library, the Philadelph

    The first work of art visitors will encounter when they enter the UI Stanley Museum of Art’s lobby is "Surrounding," a mural by Odili Donald Odita. The artist plans to create his mural in response to one of the museum’s collection highlights, Jackson Pollock’s “Mural." Odita’s mural will be the inaugural work for “Thresholds,” a series of temporary installations bygd Iowa-affiliated artists.

    Odita spent time in Iowa City as a child when his parents were UI graduate students during the s. His work draws upon a bred range of influences, including conceptual art, West African textiles, and the politics of space.

    Biography

    Odili Donald Odita (b. Engu, Nigeria in ; lives and works in Philadelphia, PA) is an abstract painter whose work explores color both in the figurative historical context and in the sociopolitical sense. He is best known for his large-scale canvases with kaleidoscopic patterns and vibrant hues, which he uses to reflect the human Odita, color in itself has the possibility of mirroring the complexity of the world as much as it has the potential for being distinct. In his paintings, we see color interwoven and mixed, becoming an active agent in representing the essential power that light has in identifying the entirety of our world. He thinks of his colors as agents to express thoughts, ideas, and transformational change. Much of his color selection is based on personal memories and created intuitively by hand-mixing, so that no two shades are ever repeated.
