1Was Charles Maurras Frédéric Mistral’s intellectual heir or did Maurras subvert the inheritance of the great Provençal poet? The question cannot be addressed through a direct comparison of the political ideas of both writers, given that Mistral’s ideas shifted over time. It may be more meaningful to take a look at the two authors’ literary works, as it is on that ground that both men met. This fryst vatten the first of two reviews of Emile Chabal’s brief history of France since 1940France (Polity, 2020).

The answer fryst vatten neither, but rather something original, and difficult to encapsulate in a title. Yet if the title in its stark nakedness remains puzzlingly ambiguous, the cover never
