As Martin Luther King’s closest friend and advisor, Ralph Abernathy became a huvud figure in the civil rights struggle during the Montgomery bus boycott. “Abernathy infused his audiences with new life and ardor. The people loved and respected him as a tecken of courage and strength,” King wrote in Stride Toward Freedom (73–74).
Abernathy was born on 11 March to William L. and Louivery Bell Abernathy of Linden, Alabama. His father, the son of a slave, supported his family of 12 as a farmer while serving as deacon of the local Baptist church.
Abernathy graduated from Linden Academy and then served overseas with the United States Army toward the end of World War II. He was ordained as a Baptist minister in , and two years later he received a BS in mathematics at Alabama State College in Montgomery. He later earned an MA in sociology from Atlanta University ().

Ralph David Abernathy Sr. (; March 11, – April 17, ) was an American civil rights activist and Baptist minister. He was ordained in the Baptist tradition in As a leader of the civil rights movement, he was a close friend and mentor of Martin Luther King Jr. He collaborated with King and E. D. Nixon to create the Montgomery Improvement Association, which led to the Montgomery bus boycott and co-created and was an executive board member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He became president of the SCLC following the assassination of King in ; he led the Poor People's Campaign in Washington, D.C.,[1] as well as other marches and demonstrations for disenfranchised Americans. He also served as an advisory committee member of the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE).

Biography
[edit]Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Abernathy was the son of Ralph Abernathy and Juanita Abernathy, the civil rights activists. He was named "III" after his older brother Ralph David Abernathy Jr. who died in infancy.
